How to Submit a MOC

Overview

Submitting a MOC is a 5-step proces. After completing each step, you can save your work and continue at a later moment. After completing the first step, the MOC will show up on your Account > Submissions page, with status In Progress. Use the Edit Submission link to pick up where you left. At any moment you can delete your MOC by using the Cancel and Delete this MOC button.

If you don't make any changes to a MOC in a status other than "Waiting for Approval" for 2 weeks, it is automatically removed. You will be sent notifications warning you before this happens.

Before submitting a MOC, make sure you have read and understood all of the rules. Failure to follow these could see you blocked from submitting MOCs.

Step 1 - Description

Use main menu MOCs > Submit a MOC to start the process. In Step 1 you will be asked to provide the MOC Details:

Description

The Description field is optional but is highly recommended. You can embed other media such as images or videos. The more descriptive and interesting your entry is, the more people will like/follow you.

Embedded Images/Videos

As a MOC Designer, you have full control over what appears in your MOC’s page. You can embed images and videos via the Description field under the Admin tab:

Simply drag and drop images into the editor or use the Upload toolbar button. Uploaded images must have a maximum file size of 10MB. You can embed Youtube videos too. Uploaded images are automatically scaled to a maximum of 800px wide by 450px tall. If you need to change these, you can do so by switching to the bbcode editor and manually adjusting the IMG tags. Alternatively, you can link to external images on Flickr, Bricksafe, etc.

You don't need to upload the same image in the description and the image tab. If you want the image to be part of the slideshow, save it for the next step.

Press the Save and Next Step button to backup your work and continue.

Step 2 - Image

Here you will be asked to provide at least one image for your new MOC. Photos of real, physical MOCs tend to work best. However, computer renderings of digital models can look good too. Try not to use simple screenshots of design tools such as Studio.

To submit your image, you can:

Upload Image from File by using the file selection box
Drag and Drop your photo to the designated area

When uploading images you can choose to Auto-crop which will remove excess background, or Apply a Watermark. Both of these will permanently alter the image, so be sure to keep a backup of your original.

The main MOC image is used in all thumbnails and the default image at the top of the MOC’s page. Click Make Primary to make that image your main image. If your image is too blury or hard to see, or if it uses unapproved non-LEGO branded parts it will probably be rejected.

Please note your primary image should be of your MOC only, should clearly show the whole MOC, and not be cut off in the 5:4 thumbnail. Secondary images can show your MOC with other things, show close ups, and have different aspect ratios.

Slideshow

If you have added any secondary images, these will cycle throguh as a slideshow when people are viewing your MOC. They can also be manually clicked through with the side arrows or by clicking the small previews at the bottom. Up to 12 images can be uploaded for your MOC.

Press the Save and Next Step button to save your work and continue.

Step 3 - Instructions

The first section of this step is where you specify if the MOC instructions are freely available or are for sale.

Free Instructions - your instructions are free to download by anyone
For Sale (Premium MOC) - you are selling the instructions and want Rebrickable to host the files and handle payments automatically. See Premium MOC Fees and Selling Premium MOCs for more details on how this works.

For Free instructions, you can link to an external site that stores them or you can upload them directly to Rebrickable. If linking to an external site, the instructions must be freely accessible and not require any sort of login or entering of personal information such as an email address.

For Premium MOC instructions, you must upload them to Rebrickable.

Instructions must provide a clear step-by-step process for building your MOC. This can be through a sequence of images/photos, a video of the build, or a 3D file of the model such as Studio/LEGO Digital Designer/LDraw files, etc. If you upload a Studio file as your instructions, this will pre-fill your inventory based on the parts used. Premium MOCs must have a PDF file of the steps included.

In the second section, you indicate if the MOC has some relationship with an existing Set or MOC. For example, it might be an alternate build of a set, or a modification of someone else's MOC. When you select this, your MOC will appear in the Alt Builds tab of the linked Set/MOC. However, because of this extra exposure we are strict with the inventory - there must be no alt build inventory errors or your MOC will not be approved.

To specify a specific inventory version for the source set, list the set number with inventory at the end like this 31109-1:v1. If no version is specified, the inventory will default to the most recent version which may change over time.

Step 4 - Inventory

There are two ways to add parts to your MOC:

Importing Parts from a file such as LDD/Studio/CSV
Adding Parts Manually

Parts are added to MOC Inventories in the same way that they are added to Part Lists. Individual parts can be added by selecting your MOC in the part summary pop up.

Generally if you have modelled your MOC with software, it is easier to add the parts in bulk. On the inventory step click Import/Delete Parts.

In the pop up window click Select a File and navigate to the model file, such as a .io studio file. If you want the newest version of each mold, tick Fix Molds; if you want specific molds that are matching your file, leave this unticked. You don't need to select the external source, as this will be detected automatically. Then click + Append Parts. Once the file is imported any errors or changes will be displayed on the bottom of the pop up window.

If you see problems listed for your inventory, you should fix them. If your MOC is a Premium one, you need to fix every error or it will be rejected. Thankfully Rebrickable makes it easy to spot and correct these errors. Learn more on the Fixing MOC Errors page.

Note that it is ok for your inventory to not match 100% with your submitted 3D file such as Studio or LDD in cases where the software does not have the correct part. Just add a note to the description to indicate the differences. For example, Studio might not have the specific windshield you need in their part catalogue, so you can pick a similar widshield to represent it in the instructions, but should change this to the correct windshield in your MOC inventory. People use the MOC inventory to buy missing parts, and will be upset if they buy the wrong parts because the inventory is incorrect.

For parts where the color doesn't matter, internal hidden parts for example, select No Color/Any Color on the color list. This helps the Build Tool match with potential users easier than selecting a random color or Unknown. For example, if you make all the parts Green a User will need all those parts in green to match with your MOC, if they are No Color/Any Color they will match with it using any colors from their collection. When modelling your MOC in software it is a good idea to pick one stand out colour that is not used elsewhere in the MOC such as pink, or lime. Then once the parts are imported you can easily change all the parts with that colour to No Colour/Any Colour using the bulk edit feature.

Press the Save and Next Step button to backup your work and continue. If needed, you can continue adding parts at a later time.

Step 5 - Submit

When you finished adding parts to the inventory, you are all done! To finalise your submission, you can add a message for the reviewing Admin if you like. Press the Submit MOC for Approval button to submit your MOC. On your Account > Submissions page, the status of the MOC will change to Waiting for Approval and you will receive an confirmation email.

You may receive a notification from the admin if there are fixes to be made before the MOC can be approved. You can edit your current submission to fix the problem and then re-submit it.

First-time submissions may take 1-2 days for approval. If you have a proven record of submitting MOCs with good details and accurate inventories, you might have future MOCs auto-approved. This means that for MOCs which don't have any inventory errors, they will be approved automatically and immediately published without waiting for an admin to review it.

However, if you abuse this auto-approve feature in future MOCs, it will be taken away from you and you may be banned from submitting anything else. There are many checks in place to prevent auto-approving MOCs that are against the rules, and sometimes these checks may prevent a valid MOC from getting auto-approved. This does not reflect poorly on your account, and will get approved manually after review.
