Rebrickable's set catalog groups sets by Theme. As a User themes are useful because they are a way to easily narrow down areas of interest. For LEGO themes are far more important as it is how they determine which sets are produced and by what team. Our aim is to follow LEGO's lead on what theme a set belongs to however with close to a century of history this isn't always consistent.
As with parts in databases like Rebrickable, Bricklink, Brickowl, etc... historical information on sets isn't always as accessible as you may think. A lot of the information we have about pre-2000 LEGO was gathered by dedicated LEGO fans in the 1990's. As Rebrickable has evolved so have our needs with how we list sets in our database. This is where commonly accepted Themes and new information (and computing abilities) have clashed. Starting in mid-2018 the Admin Team started a long term project to clean up the theme tree. The aim is to make it more intuitive for new users whilst keeping it familiar enough for longtime users, making it manageable to maintain and use for all.
The agreed criteria for LEGO theme has been tricky to condense down into a single paragraph, hence this help page.
Theme History
Until recently you may have seen themes have sub-themes that by no means were ever officially designated as such. Town > Airport for example. These sub-divisions were useful pre tagging days as it helped group similar sets together. However with the introduction of Set Tags this negated this requirement. These kind of unnecessary sub-divisions added hundreds of sub-themes to the database. With no identifying logos on packaging or promotional materials from LEGO many new users found these confusing.
In addition to databases 'making up' themes there were many themes that were less prominent (and lacked identification from LEGO) which had been ignored. Through the wonders of the internet we know far more about the history of LEGO than ever before bringing these missing themes to light. These have been added with sets that were incorrectly attributed to other themes finally finding their correct home.
Theme Definition
Here's the complicated bit. How we decide what theme a set belongs to.
Firstly the easy one. Newly released sets are grouped by what logos LEGO put on the box art. Got a Technic logo? Then it's Technic. Disney? Then Disney it goes, etc...
As such is life, there are exceptions to complicate things. Here at Rebrickable we hate having a separate theme that only contains a small handful of sets. So we often group similar licensed sets under a broader 'Master' theme. Disney is a good example of this due to limited themes like Encanto or Lightyear. These are so small and unlikely to ever get bigger so they are included under the Disney theme. They have prominent Disney branding which makes this a logical compromise to keep the theme tree simpler.
For historic themes we attempt to follow the same rule. However we have continued to use some sub-division in the 'Classic' themes like Space and Town where official sub-division doesn't really exist but is obvious due to set content.
Themes like Blacktron for example. They fall under Space and often lacked any official Blacktron branding but are clearly a group of similarly themed sets.
We have tried to maintain these historically accepted sub-themes whilst removing excessively divided themes based on nothing more than set content.
Broadly speaking, if you're trying to find a set find the biggest logo on the box that doesn't say LEGO and search there first.
