We occasionally run into conflicting part naming, requiring us to set up guidelines for them. This page will be place to document naming conventions. Categories are explained in detail on the Part Categories help page, this is for terms that could be used within multiple part categories that we would like to keep consistant.
We are in the early stages of part tagging for features, please do not submit CRs for missing tags yet.
Accessory Pin
A small pin often used for headware accessories. These parts are tagged female and male.
Axle
A cross shaped connector used in Technic. Parts are tagged with female and male.
Ball Joint / Ball Socket
A type of joint that can be freely rotated in all directions. Larger than a towball joint. These parts are also tagged with big ball joint female and big ball joint male.
Bar
A solid 3.18mm cylinder that fits inside a clip. If you can't find the part you are looking for with "bar" try searching "handle" instead which is often used when the ends are enclosed. These parts are also tagged with bar.
Clip
A part which clips onto a bar. These are also tagged with clip.
Curved
A curved edge when looking from the side.
Cutout
A section is taken out of the part, either on an edge or a corner.
Fingers
This can refer to multiple older hinge systems which used interlocking fingers.
Handle
A bar that is enclosed on both ends, or meant to be held by a minifig. Similar usage to bar.
Hole
An opening in the part, with the size of a 3.18mm bar or Technic pin. Tagged pin female.
Jumper
A part where one or more studs is offset by 1/2 a stud in one or more directions. Allows you to ‘jump’ off the normal grid.
Locking Hinge
A type of hinge that clicks into place. Tagged with female and male.
Opening
An opening in the part, with the size fitting at least an 1x1 (round) brick. A lot of parts are currently using Open Center, but seeing the opening is not always in the center, we’ll be phasing out that term.
Peg
A short bar protruding from the top or bottom of a part to line up with holes in other parts.
Pin
A round part used mostly in technic to join into a hole. Tagged with female and male.
Recessed
A lowering in the surface of the part, without leaving an all-the-way-through cut out.
Rotation Joint
A part that can rotate 360deg in one direction with a number of clicks. Comes in 2 sizes, with the larger often referred to as a rotation joint disk. Parts are tagged rotation joint.
Round
A curved edge when looking top down.
Slope
A straight edge which is not at 90 deg when looking from the side.
Towball
Sometimes known as a Mixel joint, this joint allows free rotation in all directions and is smaller than the regular ball joint. These are also tagged with small ball joint female, and small ball joint male.
Wedge
A straight edge which is not at 90 deg when looking top down.
Wheel Holder
Smaller than a regular pin, larger than an accessory pin, this connection is used for smaller wheels. Tagged female and male.
Stud Types
Studs are the most common connection type between bricks. There are a few different stud varients, knowing the difference can help when searching for specific parts.
