Arcades have been around since the 70's and were extremely popular. One of the most popular of the games that could be placed on them was PAC-MAN, designed by Mr. Iwatani and released in 1980. The idea is easy: a yellow circle with a triangle cut out (inspired by a pizza missing a slice) moves around a maze where it eats dots while being chased by ghosts. When a special dot has been eaten, the roles are reversed and PAC-MAN can hunt the ghosts. You can win the game by eating all the dots. More than 300,000 consoles were sold, and the game grossed $2.5 billion in the US alone.
I've never played the game on an arcade, but we did have a knock-off version on our 386 PC:

The Box
The box measures 58 x 47 x 12 cm and weighs 3670 grams. Inside we find 23 bags numbered 1 through 14, 1 unnumbered bag with large plates and tiles, 2 Technic frames and a cardboard sleeve containing the instructions and sticker sheet. The manual contains 351 pages. In the front is some background information on PAC-MAN, the set and the designer. The model is built in 3 sections. The pdf can be downloaded here.
The Parts
The set contains 2651 parts and 56 spares, in 25 colors, and 38 part categories, with a total of 426 unique parts/color combinations. Main colors are:
That black gear will be very welcome to MOC designers, as it makes it much easier to hide in a build than the bright versions. The same goes for the Technic Base Frame 11 x 19.
We start off with a side-build: a nice display of PAC-MAN and 2 ghosts. Inside the base we find a couple of gears. To make sure the gears are all lined up, a Tan plate and red brick are placed on the holders for the figures. After that, all gears are secured, and the figures will face the same way
The figures themselves are nice SNOT builds.
In rest, PAC-MAN is being chased by the ghosts. Press the axle in the back, and the roles are reversed and PC-MAN becomes the hunter.
On to the arcade itself.
And directly, this feels like a special build. A lot of SNOT, angles and other clever techniques are introduced. I love the holder for the controller. The rubber pieces make it possible to move it around, but always returns it back to the center position. A light is placed behind the coin slot. Hit the button, and it lights up.
With the base done, we start the side walls. These walls are made up out of 2 layers, a Yellow and a Black, each a single stud wide. Due to the colors, it is not possible to place 2-stud wide pieces, making the walls flimsy as we move up. To counter this, the designer has added 'hugging brackets'; from each wall, a bracket sticks out into the other wall, hidden by a tile. The brackets overlap, creating a sort of anchor for stability.
The preparations for the game display are added as well, including a crank and secured bars to clip the display onto later one.
The large 8 x 16 tiles are placed. I'm never a fan of large stickers, but I think it works here. The 8 x 16 has a matt finish, making it stick out from the shiny bricks around it. This would be visible when the tile was printed, but the sticker covers it up nicely.
So far, the build is a blast! And then, we come to the game display. And a lot of Technic pins show up...
The display is made up from 2 39369 Technic Base Frame 11 x 19. It's the first time for this useful part to show up in Black, making it a lot easier to use in MOCs after only being used in Yellow, Dark Turquoise and Medium Azure. First, we punch in a load of pins, and then add the first pieces to layout the maze.
The characters move around on a chain. To attach the tiles to the chain, a new part is introduced: 3249 Technic Link, Reinforced, with Bar. The part is identical to the standard chain link, aside from the bar obviously.
Sorry, I have a new camera and I messed up a setting trying to show the details in all the Black better, so this photo came out a bit budgy. The display contains 2 chains: a small one in the right bottom corner with a single ghost, and a longer around the center with PAC-MAN and more ghosts. It's a great study on how to guide a chain around corners.
Even more pins! These make up the 64(!) dots that PAC-MAN has not eaten yet. It's not fun to do, but it will be worth it.
The first tiles are added, creating the maze.
In the center is a trapped ghost, sitting on a spear head. This way, it can move sideways while staying on the same height.
The front of the maze is finished, and on the back side the drivetrain is added to put everything in motion.
A border is added, with in the top a score counter. Turning the black gear will show different scores. This finishes the display, and it gets snapped into place with a bar-and-clip connection.
The side walls of the arcade are finished up, a roof is added, and in the back comes a removable panel.
The very final stage is a small minifig scaled arcade, which can be hidden in the back
Conclusion
This set is incredible! It packs so many great things: there is a high count of 'standard' bricks, while also taking advantage of modern bricks to get the right look and feel. The color scheme of the visible parts solely includes classic colors (and Orange), which had a great effect on me while building. Don't get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with today's color palette. But going back to the original, primary colors gives a great nostalgic feel to the set, fitting with the era of the arcade itself. And underneath all the great looks is a intricate Technic system, which while complex works flawlessly. All this more than makes up for the finger-cramping stage with the many pins. The set showcases how versatile LEGO can be.
The price can spoil the fun a bit, with a ppp of 10.1, but that includes a lot of new printed parts, a new mold and some large tiles, plates and Technic frames.
cool looking set. gotta make room for it. I'll buy it on VIP weekend in November, get double VIP points, most likely 2 GWPs at that price point and 10-15% cash back from using Rakuten to maximize my money.
The mechanism is brilliant. It seems quite natural or obvious to build it this way, but I wonder how long it took to figure it out to work perfectly. Great review, too!
I don't see why not. If you just replace it where the crank is. you may want to gear it down though so it is not running to fast and stressing the chain.
Great review! A friend just bought this set to our LUG club meeting today and it is incredible! From the play features to just the display value alone and what I can only assume is a great build experience with quite a variety of techniques. It seems like a good one for even a casual collector or arcade game enthusiast.
The new part of the chain link with the hollow bar extension seems incredibly useful and if it becomes available on PAB it will greatly improve the function of a MOC I have planned.

Great review!
A friend just bought this set to our LUG club meeting today and it is incredible! From the play features to just the display value alone and what I can only assume is a great build experience with quite a variety of techniques. It seems like a good one for even a casual collector or arcade game enthusiast.
The new part of the chain link with the hollow bar extension seems incredibly useful and if it becomes available on PAB it will greatly improve the function of a MOC I have planned.
