Everyone knows Star Wars, everyone knows LEGO. For 20 years they have had a very fruitful partnership. Even though, due to the high license cost, Star Wars sets are usually the most expensive sets they are incredibly popular. Probably driven by the 'grown-ups' who have forced LEGO to offer more complex sets. Star Wars also demands some of the highest prices in secondary markets. Giving Star Wars sets even more longevity with consumers. They are high demand, and each year we get dozens more (with varying degrees of success).
Yoda, a stalwart of the Star Wars francise, has always been a weirdly popular character. It's not clear why, he's actually a bit annoying, but when he lights up Count Dooku in Attack of the Clones, boy was that exhilarating! We've had all sorts of Yoda's. From the uninspiring Brickheadz 41627-1-s2, to this unresistable clock. (Nathan edit: and of course the recent Baby Yoda craze)
But the pinnacle (pre 2019) was set 7194-1 Yoda. An early Ultimate Collector Series entry and an absolutely terrifying brick built model. It is a great example of LEGO coming out of it's awkward period in the late 90's. To achieve this blocky masterpiece you have to embrace a truly odd instruction manual too. It may not be the only example of LEGO using this style in manuals, but it's definately the only one I've ever seen. This 2002 set is incredibly valuable, Bricklink prices vary from $300 to $1300, with the most recent selling set going for $900. Unfortunately, I do not own it, so, as much as I'd like to, I can't offer any direct comparison. If you have both let me know in the comments how they compare.
This new set is not officially a remake of Block-Yoda, but is undeniably LEGO's attempt at reparations for it. This time we get a lightsaber, a stark contrast to Block-Yoda's flute necklace and cane. Along with a build that utilizes more SNOT techniques than a preschool in the winter.
The Set

The Instructions
The instruction manual measures 195 x 260 mm. With 222 pages and 547 build steps.
No new parts in this set, but more new colors than you can shake a lightsaber at.

This set comes with 1 minifigure, Yoda. This exact minifigure has appeared in 3 other sets, 75233-1, 75142-1, and 75168-1. It's really disappointing that we don't get a new one. There's like 18 Luke Skywalkers, they really couldn't give us a different Yoda? Probably should've given him a 3L lightsaber too (instead of the 4L), in the movies it's smaller than a regular lightsaber so it makes sense, and then it wouldn't look so disproportional.
The Build
Bag 1: We use all of the white 39794 Technic Frame 7 x 11, along with a bunch of of blue pins. Nothing particularly interesting here. When we get to the feet, things pick up. For some reason, once the feet are attached to the model, I can't bear to look at it. It freaks me out a little. So I hid it out of sight and moved to the next section.
Bags 2 & 3: These bags complete the front of Yoda. Bag 2 is all the reddish brown parts, bag 3 all the tan. Really not much to say about this. It's lots of laying plates on plates. The complex layers for his robes are already visable.
Bags 4 & 5: More layering plates. We finish his left side.
Bags 6 & 7: Guess what? You got it, more plates! This time for his right side. This is moderately more interesting as it incorporates the section to connect his hand into.
Bag 8: Lots to do with this bag. Yes, more plates as we complete his back, but we also build his collar, ready for the head.
Bag 9: Finally we get something different to do. We begin the head and get our hands on some Sand Green. First up, the eyes. Yes they move, allowing you to change Yoda's expression, but the range isn't huge and varies from sad to angry. We finally get to some enjoyable building.
Bag 10: Here we flesh out the face, adding cheeks, mouth, and chin.
Bag 11: The ears maketh the Yoda. Such a small part to completely transform the head.
Bag 12: The top of the head, complete with whispy hair, finishes the head. Once you attach the head to the model you finish off the back, hiding all the boring 'connecting' stuff.
Bag 13: The bit we've all been waiting for! The lightsaber is added. It's actually a really good model of a lightsaber (I added it as a subset so you can build just that if you desire). The hands wrap around the handle and actually look like they're holding the lightsaber.
Conclusion
A big nope from me. I can say with 100% certainty I've never been so bored building a LEGO set. Yes, the final model looks good, the layers of the robe are amazing and the head is perfect, it's just not fun getting here. I'm sick of plates. Writting this review of the set brought back all that boredom. I just can't make the build sound exciting. If you're a Star Wars collector who wants a nice display piece then be prepared to put the work in, otherwise I recommend you steer clear.

Maybe i'm in the minority but I actually really love the look of this set! The eyes are just a tad off putting but its mostly due to the gaps around the eyes and I have a feeling they could be modified quite easily to fix that....
Thanks for the review. Despite this, I am still looking forward to building mine. I think he looks great, and for leisurely building I find stacking plates and bricks rather relaxing. And Yoda by itself just looks a bit like a Gremlin, so I'm not surprised that any reasonable Yoda model would show some resemblence.
Great review. A few years ago I got it into Nanoblock and thought it had a lot of potential. But now it's stagnating because it is limited to plate on plate, which I agree is boring to build regardless of how a single result looks. And it makes you very unlikely to take it apart and rebuild something else. I recently built Fallingwater and for much of the time I was thinking about all the things I'd rather be doing. Layer of plate on top of plate does not capture the full possibilities and spirit of Lego. And I think that is what is great about Rebrickable, that the designs are much more adventurous. - )
To be honest: besides the head, I love the look of this thing. Beter than the bulky old version, but still the LEGO feel. And because of that, I don't like the slopes used in the head. Beauty comes with pain, so that explains the build process.
Overlooked the potential for animating Yoda you have. Yeah, that gets old very quickly, but still, to my eye the internal dimensions look just about move hub sized. I think there are quite interesting possibilities there surely?
In my humble opinion, this Yoda looks like crap. It's not about the complexity of the design, it's about how ugly Yoda looks in the end, once assembled. I mean, Yoda wasn't a good-looking character, but not THAT ugly. :) Looks like Chucky, the doll.
I have 7194 and love it. It is an old school Lego SW with old school building techniques and it’s not very detailed guide makes the construction quite challenging, which is a good point according to me. About the new one, besides boring build you have described, my opinion is that it looks like a Gremlin, not Yoda. End of story.

And Yoda by itself just looks a bit like a Gremlin, so I'm not surprised that any reasonable Yoda model would show some resemblence.
Beauty comes with pain, so that explains the build process.
About the new one, besides boring build you have described, my opinion is that it looks like a Gremlin, not Yoda. End of story.
